No School – Monday, January 15th

Taking place each year on the 3rd Monday in January, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK Day) in memory of his service and vision.

As designated by Congress (the only federal holiday designated as such), MLK Day is considered to be a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off”.

Participation in service activities has grown each year as more Americans are encouraged to provide meaningful change in their communities.

No matter the choice, service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community. It breaks down barriers by bringing people from different backgrounds together and it benefits those who choose to serve.

Here are a few project ideas to help celebrate:

  1. Donate or Volunteer at Food Banks and Food Pantries (visit Feeding America or Food Pantries to find an organization near you
  2. Deliver Meals and Groceries to seniors (help out someone you know or visit Meels on Wheels to learn ways to volunteer)
  3. Donate Medical Supplies and Equipment (email FEMA’s National Business Emergency Operations Center at nbeoc@fema.dhs.gov)
  4. Stay in Touch (Check with your neighbors, friends, family, especially those who are older or may be alone. A phone call, text, or a conversation through a door could brighten their day.)
  5. Serve in your Community (visit your State Service Commission’s website for details)
  6. Volunteer from Home (check out AllforGood.org for service ideas)

If you have other Project Ideas, join us on Instagram or Facebook and post them on our page to share with others!
